Students in Amanda Carvo’s third-grade class at Round Hill Elementary School gathered to enjoy a reading of Curious Why by Angela DiTerlizzi. The book, read by principal Kristin Shaw in honor of Read Across America, is meant to show students the possibilities that exist within their imagination and remind them that it’s much easier than they think to have fun. All they need is a little curiosity.
“I think it’s really important that as you get older, you spend time relaxing and focusing your mind,” Ms. Shaw said. “When you go home and you do some quiet reading, you can put yourself into an imaginary world.”
After hearing the story from Ms. Shaw, students discussed the message of the book and learned about the value of spending their time wisely and being creative through different activities like drawing or painting. They also shared what they like to do in their free time, like playing Roblox, Minecraft or watching their favorite TV show.
“Whenever I am home on a day that school has been cancelled, I like to do arts and crafts,” said third-grade student Emmalynn Fina.
Read Across America encourages students and adults alike to read and celebrate reading in all its forms. The celebration is organized by the National Education Association and promotes literacy, encourages a love of reading, and honors the importance of books in everyone’s lives.
