“What do we need to grow strong?” Round Hill Elementary School’s PTA president Eliana Garry asked students as she spoke with them about why they were planting the bulbs in front of their school.
“Vegetables! Protein! Broccoli!” replied students.
“This bulb is a symbol that we are going to keep ourselves healthy the way that we will keep our flowers healthy,” said Eliana. “Then, we can grow big and strong.”
The warm fall weather created the perfect day for students at Round Hill Elementary School to head outside for their annual Plant the Promise event on Wednesday morning.
The event, led by the PTA and the Just Say No Club, helps younger students understand what Red Ribbon Week is about. Students pledge to stay away from drugs and alcohol and promise to make good choices and lead a healthy lifestyle. They “plant their promise" in the form of a flower bulb that symbolizes their commitment to the pledge. Their efforts will then bloom at a later time — in this case, the spring.
